Residency Training

The Department of Physiology is located in the School of Medicine Building on our Faculty’s Rumeli Feneri campus, and it provides to all of the Ministry of Health’s physical requirements. The faculty of the Department have been conducting both research and education functions. There are three professors and one assistant professor in the Department.

The goal of the physiology residency program is to have academic knowledge of basic physiologic mechanisms and applications, to be able to reach, interpret, and present scientific data, to be experienced in experimental research and methods, to use appropriate research methods to solve a scientific problem, to have a culture of scientific thought, and to train experts with ethical values.

In addition to the Physiology Residency Training Core Program, our department offers electrophysiology (intraoperative neuromonitoring), in vitro cell physiology training, and molecular physiology (immunofluorescence, western, and RT-PCR) training within the framework of the Extended Core Training Program.

The training period is three years long and includes all of the components (thesis, list of competencies, final exam) required by current legislation for residency training completion. Each resident who has just begun the residency training program is subjected to an “orientation program.” This program lasts one month and is divided into two sections. The first part is an orientation to the Faculty of Medicine at Koç University, and the second part is an orientation to the Department of Physiology.

PhD Program

The Physiology PhD program is conducted at Koç University Graduate School of Health Sciences. It aims to train the next generation of leading scientists who will shape research and education in universities, hospitals, biotechnology, or pharmaceutical industries. Our PhD program will involve postgraduate students in cutting-edge research on new and important questions in multiple disciplines, including Neurophysiology, Muscle, Cardiovascular Physiology, and Cancer Biology. Our distinguished faculty are leaders in their fields, providing valuable guidance and training, creating personalized study programs to best meet each student’s unique educational needs and professional development goals. Our program aims to provide a broad interdisciplinary approach to basic physiology knowledge including translational physiology, clinical physiology, personalized medicine, and biomedical applications. Collaboration of the faculty members of the Physiology PhD Program with basic and surgical disciplines such as Molecular Biology and Genetics, Pharmacology, Biochemistry, Biomedical Engineering, Pediatrics, Neurology, Hematology, Neurosurgery, Orthopedics, Obstetrics, Ophthalmology, provides an international standard and research opportunities to the graduate students in the program. Students in our program also benefit from a multidisciplinary collaborative environment at Koç University Hospital as well as various hospitals, engineering, science, and social sciences departments, international research groups, and research institutes. When the interdisciplinary collaborative culture at Koç University is combined with the experienced faculty in the fields of Medicine, Science, and Engineering, students studying in the Physiology PhD Program are expected to produce studies with high impact factors. Furthermore, Koç University Translational Medicine Research Center (KUTTAM) infrastructure and technological equipment enable qualified researchers to be trained in our PhD program. It is expected that qualified researchers trained in the program will continue the interdisciplinary collaboration they have developed throughout their careers, making significant contributions to the development of new solutions for human health and conducting pioneering and innovative studies in the field of health in Türkiye.

Master’s Program

The master’s program aims to provide the candidates with a bachelor’s degree, a notion of basic physiology, as well as an adequate research laboratory experience. In this context, program graduates will be able to study in relevant laboratories and continue their research, as well as to continue to multidisciplinary PhD programs. Students with a master’s degree can transfer to the PhD program, where they have the opportunity to develop their careers in the field of physiology.
